What is it?
Operation Christmas Batch is our name for the project we’re doing - raising money for Operation Christmas Child. The name honors Benedict Cumberbatch, who is himself very heavily involved in charity work.
Okay, so what is Operation Christmas Child?
Operation Christmas Child is a charity set up by the church in 1990 to send Christmas presents to children in third world countries, children who have probably never had a Christmas present before in their lives. Over 100 million presents have been sent during the 23 years the charity has been in operation. This year we want to help.
So how can I help?
I have set up two methods in which you can help and be a part of this project. The first is donating money to me (Stephy) as I will personally be wrapping and packing presents to be collected by the charity in Nottingham. Every single penny donated will go towards making up these presents and everyone who donates will be put on a list on this blog so everyone can keep track of where the money is going. I will be putting up my shopping list on in a diary so you can make sure you know what I am up to. (If something happens, ie I can’t get shoeboxes, over 400 boxes waiting to be packed, project becomes impossible, the team will do what it can to keep on track but if this should happen the money will be redirected to the online donations only. Though we will literally do our best to keep things running as smooth as possible.)
The second is a Virgin Money Page - this money will go towards paying for the transport of thousands of presents from the UK and America to the children, as well as providing villages with clean water and livestock for families. Note: this money will not go towards making up presents. As much as I have tried, online donations go to the charity’s work itself and not to making gifts.
What is the gift?
This is a shoebox present. A shoebox is wrapped in christmas paper and then packed with essentials this will include a bar of soap, a wash cloth, toothpaste, toothbrush but also more enjoyable things like a hairbrush, sweets, a hat, gloves, jewellery, pencils, a note book and some small toys.
It’s Christmas and I don’t have very much money to give…
I completely understand. Christmas time is hard on us all. We are not asking for a lot of money, however; anything around £5 works nicely. I’d say the best amount would be £2. More or less if you wish, of course! Also, just re-blogging this post would be help enough for us. Each box costs about £14 to pack and send. 7 people at £2 each and a child will be overjoyed! Also note if we get a lot of donations we may add more stuff to the boxes, for example another toy car or another soft toy but you will be told about this in advance.
Why not CumberAngels? The charity itself was started by a church and is still mostly run by the church. So why can’t we be fans of Mr. Cumberbatch AND give these children gifts? Why can’t we be like guardian angels? I know that a present at Christmas isn’t a lot… but it will stay with these children forever to know that someone very far away cares for them. And that’s pretty special to all of us here at Operation Christmas Batch.
